HEALTH CARE RANT 2K9 PT. II

November 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I hurt my back this morning. I thought it would get better, but it’s not. It’s getting worse. I’m insured, but I only get two office visits per year (a privilege I pay $90/month for), so I don’t want to use one now and then get sick twice in quick succession. I also don’t know if it’s two visits per calendar year or per year measured by the start of my coverage date. If it’s calendar year, then I’m probably okay going to the doctor for this, but if it’s the latter, then I’m sure this is the best use of resources. I also don’t know if it’s two general office visits per year, plus whatever special visits or therapy flow from a general visit. Like if I use one of my visits now, will I have to pay for any chiropractic visits past the first one (the second “free” visit)? Is chiropractic even covered? Or is it just weird quackery peddled by charlatans? Should I just get some Vicodin? Is that covered?!? AGHSHGS:GHSGLIDSFGHDSFGHDKGSD I AM TALKING SERIOUS FRUSTRATION HERE

At any rate, I would just like to reiterate how unbelievably stupid and ineffective our current health care system is. I don’t really care if it is the “most advanced in the world.” It doesn’t matter how “advanced” it is; if I can’t use it, it’s useless to me. I guess what I’m saying is that I’d sacrifice some technological advancement for some accessibility. It’s moments like this that I really miss the D-land, where the health care flowed freely and I never had to worry about saving my doctor’s office visits for the rainiest day I’d have that year. And if anyone replies “BUT YOU HAD TO WAIT A LONG TIME TO SEE THE DOCTOR” I will punch that person in the face. I didn’t know a single person in Germany who had to wait an inordinate amount of time for any health-care-related service, so save that rhetoric for the town hall or the tea party. I’m not saying I want socialized medicine, but I don’t want whatever this crappy system we have now is.

Christmas Village War 2k9 is ON. In other words, I am going head-to-head against LT and CD in making a Christmas village. By Christmas village, I mean something the likes of this:

You buy the plain white ceramic buildings, paint them, buy the other accoutrements, and assemble the village. Mine is going to rock. And I totally buying/making a crack dealer to come in and trash up their village. They ain’t nothin’ on me.

It’s weird when you get something that you wanted, just about…eight years later than you really wanted it.

“Millions!”, or “If you can’t pay back your loan, get another loan!” – A Post-Finals Post

November 8, 2009 · 2 Comments

Normally, I don’t complain about school on my blog, but today, I make an exception. I was warned that my last final was going to be arbitrary and capricious, and that was absolutely true. Several multiple-choice questions were so ambiguous that it didn’t even seem like an exercise in making sure we knew the law, it just seemed like negligent test-writing. And based on the quality of the instruction during the class (abysmal), I can’t help but think negligence was to blame and not just tricky test-writing. (Trickiest test award, by the way, goes to Trusts and Estates.) We could explain our answers, but I don’t want to have to do that. I want to be able to mark an answer with confidence when I have studied and know the law, not mark an answer and then write “I am answering A, but I’m assuming that there is not an owner-occupied residence on the property, since the facts do not indicate any such residence. If there were an owner-occupied residence on the property, there answer would be D.” Just write questions clearly, i.e., with all the relevant facts so I don’t have to explain anything and you don’t have to read my verbose, clearly-written-by-a-former-liberal-arts-student explanations. And telling me to “not assume any facts that aren’t there” is not a helpful instruction. Does that mean I can assume that facts that aren’t there aren’t true? Does that mean that when a client comes into my office two years from now and tells me his legal problem that I shouldn’t ask him questions so he can fill in any gaps in the story so that I can do my job properly? Thanks for the lesson in taking the bullet train to My First Malpractice Lawsuit.

Immediately after the final, I went and dropped a class I was enrolled in because the same professor teaches it. Sorry, I love the material, but I’m not putting myself through that again. Thanks but no thanks; I’ll CLE it, no big deal. None of it is on the bar anyway. But it makes me a little sad. In my applicant essay, I mentioned one area of law that I am really interested in. This professor teaches almost all of the classes in that area. So, I guess I’m not going to be taking the classes I really wanted to take. The instruction is just that bad. I think I probably know more now than I would if I took the classes.

The next round of classes will be better though; three of them are with professors that I have already had, and that I know are competent and good at teaching. I’m also taking a class with an adjunct, also known as Gambling Big With My Class Schedule. But one of four isn’t too bad. And as long as my Number One Most Horrible Adjunct Instructor Nightmare doesn’t come true, you won’t catch me complaining.

End-Stage Renal Disease?

November 4, 2009 · 5 Comments

“Medicare is health insurance for people who are: (1) age 65 or older, (2) under 65 with certain disabilities, or (3) of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease.”

- class materials for Elder Law lecture on Medicare

Not that begrudge End-Stage Renal Disease patients federally funded health care, but what is it about this disease that warrants special, explicit coverage by Medicare? It is very costly, yet somewhat rare such that (potentially) universal coverage of the disease is economically feasible? Did some Congressperson decide champion coverage of this disease after his child died from it? I’d like to look up the legislative history on this, but (1) I don’t have time right now, and (2) I don’t remember how to look up federal legislative history. (1) might not change in the near future, but I have a feelings that Advanced Legal Research is going to take care of (2).

This is boring.

I feel like the content of my blog is lackluster and leaves a lot to be desired. It seems to generally consist of NOTES about my life, how I am working toward becoming outrageous, and how much I love the Probate Code. Around finals time, it devolves into “OMG I HAVE A TEST YOU GUYS WAHH!” Then sometimes, I just go silent and don’t make any updates.

What are interesting things that I could write about?

T&E final = good Lord. I love marital property and studied a lot for this class but there were twists of facts that confused me and I definitely messed up on at least two or three things. That I can remember, anyway, In any case, I’m 2 down, 2 to go. Then Austin for seafood, then Houston for the weekend. Then a new set of classes on Monday.
